Looks like Azure has recently changed the label for their Blackstrap Molasses. The label for their old-fashioned Blackstrap Molasses, product SW021, now says it’s 60 calories per Tbsp.

Click link to product page below to see current labeling information:

Azurestandard.com now has their Blackstrap Molasses in stock. This is the 32.1 cal/Tbsp stuff. Patrick, I’d be happy to receive the sulfur that you promised to anyone finding a ready source of molasses below 40 cal/Tbsp.

Regarding lowering the sugar/carbohydrate level in organic molasses, how about fermenting it just a little – perhaps with some good quality probiotics? That will turn some of the sugar to alcohol, I think. But I’m not sure if that will be a healthier situation or not – any opinions?

Patrick: I live on the Big Island. I bought a bottle of Plantation molasses from a local health food store that has 42 calories per tbsp. But another store in Hilo also carries Plantation, but it has 60 calories per tbsp. Go figure. So some bottles of Plantation can be found with 42 calories per tbsp.

Aloha Ron, yes…that is not unusual. According to Dr. D. they stopped making the below 50 calories per TBS some time ago,but
the older lower calorie stock is still out and about.

Found another molasses from amazon Tate & Lyle’s Black Treacle 454 g https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EW7T3D2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_epsbDbR5EEBS8
It’s at 37 caps per tbs. I have the old plantation version in my pantry at 46 cal. Hope this helps. Great show!

Unless my math is wrong, at 2.9 calories per gram and 15 grams per tablespoon, Tate & Lyle’s Black Treacle comes out to about 43.5 calories per tablespoon. The label specifies energy in kcals, but one kcal is the same as one Calorie.
