“The first gamma garden was built in Long Island near New York, USA, whereas in India it was installed at the Bose Research Institute, Calcutta in 1959. A little later, another gamma-garden was built in New Delhi at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in 1960. A gamma-garden has also been established at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay. The IARI gamma-garden has an area of 3 acres, and is surrounded by a wall 12 ft high and 3 ft thick. This brick wall is in turn enclosed with a barbed wire fence. The gamma-ray source consists of 6 g of Co in form of small pellets; the Co pellets are sealed in an aluminum capsule. The strength of the Co source is 200 curies. The aluminum capsule is housed in a lead container, since lead is not penetrated by gamma rays or X-rays. When irradiation is to be done, the lid of the lead container is lifted; the aluminum capsule containing the Co pellets is also raised simultaneously. The lead container is opened and closed by a remote control device.”
