Most cases of black hairy tongue don’t look hairy.

They just look black, especially the posterior tongue.

There are two types of black tongue …

1) The black color is easily washed away with a toothbrush.

Some dentists advise sucking on a peach pit as a substitute for brushing.

Oral chemistry occasionally combines with food pigments (beets, coffee, tea, etc.) to color the tongue black.

It’s almost always a focal issue, not a multi-focal or systemic one.

2) The black color won’t wash away by brushing (or sucking on a peach pit).

The second category is most prevalent among “middle-aged” men.

Biological middle-aged men are more alkaline (by definition).

Chronological middle-aged men can be either acidic or alkaline.

The tongue papillae become overly sensitive to chemical agents of all kinds.

This is usually caused by five things …

1) keratinization of the papillae

2) delayed shedding of the keratin layer

3) inadequate lymph flow to and from the papillae

4) nicotinic acid/nicotinamide deficiency or disorder

5) some or all of the above

This type of black tongue is diagnosed as “black hairy tongue.”

It’s either focal, multi-focal, or systemic.

The “hairiness” only occurs if the papillae grow beyond a certain size, growing as much as fifteen times larger than healthy, pinkish-white papillae.

1) Chemotherapy can cause a black tongue.

Chemo destroys keratin.

However, other symptoms usually accompany this systemic destruction of keratin.

a) “Chemo curl” turns straight hair into curls.

b) Fingernail “moons” turn black.

c) Taste distortions occur.

This type of black tongue obviously indicates a systemic destruction of keratin.

2) Radiation (especially head, neck, or dental radiation) can also cause a black tongue.

This includes ultraviolet radiation.

That’s why a giraffe’s Gene Simmons-like tongue is usually black, especially if silver or bismuth micronutrients are in the leaves, buds, and shoots it eats.

Cashews and/or pine nuts, preferably with an apple, at Stomach Time (7:00-9:00 a.m.).

To preserve healthy hearing, it’s important not to let the tongue get either too white or too red.

The tongue is an indicator of pH.

Can orange juice be taken right after almonds in the morning or do you have to leave a gap ?

Almonds are eaten first, followed immediately by the rest of breakfast, except for orange juice.

Orange juice is best taken at Spleen-Pancreas Time an hour or two later. Almonds can be combined with citrus then too because of its unique mineral profile.

It’s rich in the Twelve Basic Minerals: calcium, carbon, chlorine; silicon, sodium, sulfur, iron, fluorine; magnesium, manganese; phosphorus, and potassium.

Our extra-large breakfast may be too much for most people, and a smaller meal is perfectly OK …
