Dr. Thomas E. Levy

Author of Magnesium: Reversing Disease

We had Dr. Levy on the show about 2 weeks ago talking about rebooting the gut. If you missed the show, check it out here. He will be joining us again to discuss his new book about magnesium. We’ve been following Dr. Levy’s work for well over a decade, especially his work with vitamin C. If you want to dig into a really great interview, one of our most popular and most downloaded to date check out the interview below

Dr. Thomas Levy M.D. – Primal Panacea – Vitamin C: The Most Important of All Supplements – September 29, 2011

Probably the single most important property of magnesium in the body is its ability to act as a natural biological antagonist to calcium. As most adults have excess calcium throughout their bodies, it is this reciprocal relationship between magnesium and calcium that makes most people in need of regular magnesium supplementation.

The dangers of magnesium deficiency

In fact, the more you have of one, the less you have of the other. When calcium levels are high in the cells and the extracellular fluids, as they are in most adults, magnesium levels are corresponding low. And, because of this unique relationship, taking regular sizeable doses of supplemental magnesium works to mobilize and excrete calcium – which is one of the healthiest effects that can result to the typical body overloaded with calcium.

The medical myth surrounding calcium

Deficiency of calcium is common in aged bone, but, in contrast to what is believed by many docs and supplement takers, there really is no such thing as a body-wide deficiency of calcium, only normalcy, which is rare, and excess, which is very common.

So what does magnesium do for us?

Just like the class of prescription drugs known as calcium channel blockers, magnesium appears to have the ability to block calcium channels. This ability to block these channels that extend across the cell membranes results in a limitation of the calcium quantity that would otherwise be taken up by the cells – effectively lowering the intracellular concentrations of calcium in the cells throughout the body.

Largely because of this effect on excess calcium inside the cells of the body, supplemental magnesium has been documented to be beneficial in asthma, eclampsia, migraines, hypertension, convulsive disorders, stroke, atherosclerosis, acute myocardial infarction, and inflammation in general.

Increased smooth muscle tone is one common denominator among these conditions, and magnesium, like a prescription calcium channel blocker, can very effectively bring down elevated blood pressures.

Do you suffer with osteoporosis? (Read this)

Because of its unique relationship to calcium, along with its ability to largely normalize calcium metabolism when present in sufficient amounts, magnesium is a very effective anti-osteoporosis agent.

As a monotherapy, it has demonstrated the ability to increase bone density and to decrease fracture incidence. In addition, magnesium can dissolve abnormal calcium deposits outside of the bone and keep them in solution until re-utilized in normal calcium metabolism or excreted in the urine.

It has also been documented to decrease elevated intracellular levels of calcium – a very important component of all chronic degenerative diseases, including cancer. The “flip side,” a magnesium deficiency, has been documented to promote abnormal calcium deposition, increase the calcium levels inside cells, initiate the pathology of osteoporosis, and even promote the growth of cancer cells.

Dr. Thomas E. Levy is a board certified cardiologist and has written six books on health-related issues. Most of his work has centered on how to restore and maintain good health in the face of the many different forms of toxicity that all of us face, typically on a daily basis. He no longer has a clinical practice of medicine and cardiology. Rather, he limits himself to research and writing at this time, and he is currently working on his seventh book, Death by Calcium: The Supplement that Kills.

You know all these people you have on your program just confuses me you have ray peat saying calcium is great and then you have this guy Thomas levy saying to avoid it ray peat says you need to drink milk for calcium because if your body signals low calcium the parathyroid kicks in and leaches from your bones so who do you believe I’m at a loss.

I understand Marlene. The only person you can believe absolutely is the body/mind you use. Try things out, test if you are unsure of where things are…feel how you feel, be aware of your elimination, energy levels, ability to do what you want, your attitude, how you look, the shine in your eyes. Look and see everything with as neutral position as possible. You are in charge.

I believe Thomas Levy, he has put me on the right path a few times. I believe milk is a myth I have tried raw milk another myth. I was promised by a Pakistan health Guru that if I drank raw milk all my allergies would go away and I would put on weight again, and guess what neither happened after months on the dreadful stuff. And I have to say I had an open mind about it.

A German naturopath once told me that ‘all’ allergies are a sign of toxic liver.
You can establish quite easily if this is the case by detoxing the liver. Research methylation, liver / gallbladder flushes, and chinese bitters. If your ‘cleansing effects’ are very pronounced then this is good news, as you can progress there.

Peat seems to consume just milk & coffee in the morning alone… not “with meals”… perhaps when a gallon/half can be beneficial… yet, admittingly, I too am out to lunch… miss fine milk and love cheese. Peace!
