Dr. Michelle Kmiec

Since choline is a critical component of many fat-containing compounds in the cell membrane (also see Vitamin B8; Inositol), and since the cell membrane is almost entirely made of fats, the flexibility and integrity of the membrane is inextricably linked to adequate choline supplies.

Phosphatidlycholine and sphingomylelin are two examples of membrane structures that require choline.

These fat-like molecules account for an unusually high percentage of the total solids in the brain. Therefore, choline is particularly important for the health of the brain and has significant potential for therapeutic use in brain disorders.

Choline is an important vitamin that is most often “missing in action” in most multi-vitamin formulas as well as in some B-complex formulas.

Yet, oddly though, this vital nutrient is added to animal feed to ensure their good health.

Besides an important component for healthy liver function, choline is tied closely with the nervous system. Did you know that without choline, your heart would stop beating?

Cure For Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?

Remember the issue of patients receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) that later develop lactic acidosis (see Lactic Acidosis and Parenteral Nutrition)? We learned that the condition was totally resolved by adding thiamine; yet, the RDI of thiamine regarding PN was barely changed despite the results.

Well here we go again, but this time with Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).

Merck (respected medical manual of diagnosis and therapy)defines TPN as:

“Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) supplies all daily nutritional requirements.”

“Supplies all dailynutritionalrequirements?” Really?

Professor Steven Zeisel of the Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina’s School of Public Health in Chapel Hill as well as editor-in-Chief of the esteemed Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, is a choline researcher and made the connection between choline and the development of fat accumulation in the liver (non-alcoholicfatty liver).

He found that because choline is not part of the TPN mixture, patients had developed fat accumulation in liver and the death of liver cells!

Prof. Zeisel also reports that there have been three papers in the Journal of Gastroenterology reporting that when those patients with excessive fat accumulation of their liver were given a choline supplement with the TPN, the fat in the liver disappeared!

So, obviously choline has been added to TPN mixtures right? Well you’d think so, but the answer is no. It hasn’t.

Not only that, another vital nutrient is missing from the list of daily nutritional requirements listed on the TPN is Vitamin B12! Without question one of the most deficient vitamin in our country today!

The problem ofnutritionaldeficienciesgoes beyond the scope of TPN and PN.

If the FDA doesn’t endorse adding vitalnutrientssuch as thiamine, choline and vitamin B12 in their approved mixtures of so-called totalnutritioneven after their own research proves the prevention and/or cure of dangerous health conditions with those nutrients, then what makes you think theirrecommendationof “a healthy diet” is ideal for good health?

And we trust modern medical dogma and the FDA?

Healthy = No Profits

It’s as simple as that.
