Why Drug Resistant Bacteria is a Potential Catastrophe

Dr. Brad Spellberg is an infectious disease specialist who works as an academic hospitalist, attending on the inpatient medicine wards. He also works closely with the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) to bring attention to problems stemming from an increase in drug resistance and a dip in new antibiotic development. His research has become a cornerstone of the IDSA’s white paper, Bad Bugs, No Drugs, and has been cited extensively in medical literature and on Capitol Hill. A Fellow in the IDSA, Dr. Spellberg joined the IDSA’s Antimicrobial Availability Task Force (AATF) and has first-authored numerous IDSA position papers and review articles relating to public policy toward antibiotic resistance and development. Dr. Spellberg has appeared on numerous television programs, including The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, the Dr. Oz show, and The Doctors, and has been interviewed for dozens of radio and newspaper stories regarding the antibiotic resistance crisis. He wrote the book, Rising Plague, to inform and educate the public about the crisis in antibiotic-resistant infections and the lack of antibiotic development.

Show Highlights:

-Why bacteria has become resistant to antibiotics

-Dr. Spellberg explains how bacteria actually created antibiotics; we didn’t

-Dr. Spellberg explains the history of antibiotics and how they ar necessary to save lives. In the pre-antibiotic days, 1 in 3 persons suffering from pneumonia died

-On the flip side, antibiotics are abused and overly prescribed. Dr. Spellberg gives some excellent points to ponder with your physician. Patient empowerment is crucial

-Did you know that 80% of antibiotics are used for livestock

-Antibiotics and the gut

-The flu vaccine: Patrick poses some tough questions for Dr. Spellberg, a real proponent of vaccines

-Patrick comments that after all, aren’t the drug companies funding many scientists and medical schools. We did our own investigation

And so much more information packed into this lively and informative interview!

He had a little credibility in the beginning, but then it became apparent he is a medical “branwashee”

His insights included: doctor’s know all, some very smart people are in charge who know which vaccines to make each year, vaccines have nothing to do with autism and benefits vastly outweigh costs, drug company science is totally objective and principled, the drug companies eradicated polio, etc…

Well, I’m glad he set us all straight!

PS, I’m sure this audience would have had a field day interrogating this guy if there were more time. Hat tip to Patrick for keeping some restraint

Dan’ s comment is such a great summary.

Vaccines have enabled us to swap short term survival of the fittest, acute infectious disease epidemics that strengthens the survivors, for long term chronic disease epidemics that fund the pharmaceutical companies.

Whilst I personally am sure that vaccines contribute to many chronic diseases, as does environmental heavy metal contamination and dental mercury etc etc I just want to point people to the Dr Senff’s research, from her interview the other day which finds a link between the widespread use of NPK fertilisers, its interference with the sulphur upstake of plants and incidence of autism.

I mean Glyphostes and Autism from the other day, sorry

I’m sorry, I have to stop listening to this Dr. Spellburg trying to spellbind the listeners into believing the pharmaceuticals are benevolent.

    What an Angry Man.
    Total False Propaganda.
Interesting to see how these type of Medical Mafia types are trained to act.
Time to shut this one off.

He was only angry at Patrick’s questions. Besides, what’s a guy to do when he’s been paid $152,071 by the drug companies in consulting fees over the 3 years time? We can talk ourselves into siding with anyone who is feeding us. Right? Just a thought. http://www.propublica.org/series/dollars-for-docs

Nice investigative work. He’s right there on the list of consultants for Big Pharma.
