Topic: Price of Pain and Safer Options for Relief
Pain has become a massive problem that affects 125 million Americans who according to Consumer Reports are spending close to $300 billion on pills, pot, procedures and natural remedies to find relief. These numbers are fueling a national conversation about pain relief and how it should be addressed. Are doctors responsible for the painkiller epidemic or is it the patient’s fault and what can be done to reduce the painkiller addition in our country?
Dr. Lillie Rosenthal, DO, a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician in New York City says patients in pain are often looking for quick relief when they go to their doctor demanding painkillers. It’s the doctor’s responsibility, as well as the patient’s, to step back and take time to assess the root causes and explore the best protocol for immediate and long-term relief.
Rosenthal says even innocently starting with frequent use of over-the-counter painkillers can be a slippery slope to addiction. She says pain is your body’s way of alerting you to an underlying problem that needs to be resolved, not masked. Rosenthal will share with your audience proven diet fixes, relief remedies and lifestyle changes that can help pain sufferers get quick and long-lasting pain relief from some of the three most common areas of pain complaints including: muscle, joint and head pain; and how to reduce reliance on heavy sedative medication.
Show Highlights:
-Uses natural means to accelerate healing. E.g Arnica for muscle pain, ice for 24 hrs., then heat.
-Identify root cause of where pain is coming from. Back pain – need detailed history and examination.
-Pain is the symptom, not the diagnosis. X-rays don’t show a bulging disc.
-Most back pain doesn’t require surgery. Work on core strengthening, posture, diet.
-Food can be inflammatory, especially processed foods and sugar. Eat diet high in micronutrients – plant-based, with nuts, flax seed, and beans.
-Trigger points – muscle knots, areas of spasm. Treat with manual work, arnica, trigger point injections with lidocaine. Mechanical problems need mechanical treatments, not opiates.
-Hiatal hernia – don’t eat big meal before going to bed, eat good food, lose weight.
-Vagus nerve problems – reduce sympathetic nervous system mode. Stay in balance, decrease toxic load.
-Listener asks about numbness in bottom of feet. Tingling or numbness suggests neuropathic pain. B vitamins and exercise important for nerve health, staying away from processed foods.
-Meat slows down digestion. Eat lots of vegetables. Avoid things in a bag or box. Eat plants, not things that are made in a plant. Hydrate well. 80% of chronic diseases are affected by our diet and lifestyle.
-Trigger point injections with lidocaine– work primarily by mechanical stimulation by the needle.
-PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma therapy – potentiating the body’s own healing power.
-Neuropathic pain, such as postherpetic neuralgia, difficult to treat. Support the nerves.
-Leg Cramping – can be due to low magnesium, dehydration.

My thanks to Dr. Lillie and to Patrick. As important are the recommended protocols, the “don’ts” have great value! The pont unfortunately is that statastics show that over 90% of pepople would rather die than change, literally. And I learned recently that resistance to change is built into the wiring of the brain. So I guess any practitioner also has to be a very clever psychologist…
I enjoy hearing how both Patrick and the guests are up on things like epigenetics, EMF’s, healing diets, and other features of today’s world that so many classically trained doctors have no idea about! Or if they do they can lose their licenses for suggesting natural paths to health rather than writing a prescription.
I want to get in a good word here for Structuring your water! See: http://thewellnessenterprise.com/?twe=PureWater
Patrick and Dr. Lillie (and I trust Yours Truly as well) are part of the revolution that is happening with increasing speed and scope. Bravo!

A good reference site for trigger points is http://www.triggerpoints.net. It can be beneficial to massage both the trigger point and the area of pain for relief.
