2 Hour Gardening Special
It’s Spring!
Time to Plant Your Garden
George studied Chemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology at The University of Texas, Austin and started Austin’s first organic nursery in 1971 before organic was cool. He has considerable knowledge in all areas of food production, including the proper care and feeding of animals for food. He has a deep understanding of the principals of agriculture and nutrition. We think you’ll find George a delight to spend time with.
Show Highlights:
-George updates us on what’s going on in the world of GMOs
-Your liver can’t detoxify certain proteins if it’s not getting certain minerals. George explains
-Up until the 1950s cancer was a rarity in children; now it’s the #1 killer. George tells us why
-George talks about the lack of sulfur in the soil; how to add it to enrich the soil; and which type of sulfur to buy
-Using EcoVie in the soil to increase mineral content in homegrown food http://www.ecoorganics.com/ecovie/
-The role of H. Pylori in the gut
-What about adding probiotics to the soil; it is a good idea? George responds
-Mineral deficiencies are the main reasons for immune system breakdown; George shares a story on how he used iodine to help a friend with shingles
-Are paramagnetic substances worth looking into?
-What is compost tea and how it is brewed?
-Why earthworm castings are so good for the soil
-Top plants that uptake more minerals from the soil
-A listener sends in some good information and links:

Just want to address the major factor in the chickenpox/shingles connection that George didn’t mention. In previous days, before the chickenpox vaccine, adult members of the community were routinely exposed to chickenpox because it was endemic in the community, giving lifelong immunity and acting as a “booster” for adults. Therefore shingles (reactivation of herpes zoster virus) was uncommon. Now that kids don’t get chickenpox anymore, the downstream effect is older adults getting the shingles because they’re no longer getting exposure from the kids, which would refresh their antibody reaction. It has been said that we’ve traded a beneficial, mild routine childhood illness for a serious, life-threatening adult illness. Just another example of the ignorance, arrogance and shortsightedness of “modern” medicine interfering with nature’s plan. We’re supposed to get childhood illnesses in childhood. Take that away and you screw up the whole ecosystem. “It’s not nice to (try to) fool Mother Nature. The joke’s on us and it’s not very funny!

Regarding mineral supplementation: I am seeing a lot of commentary on feeding egg shells to poultry to replace the calcium they direct to their shells as well as the use of oyster shells and bones. Some people have family traditions of eating eggshells to replace calcium loss in general. In these modern wacky times, I wonder if the heavy metal and heavy ion contamination issues our civilization has introduced into our food stream might warrant some soil scientist thinking here. I have heard ecologist David Blume say that composting plants raised in heavy metal contaminated soil areas will bind up the mercury and other heavy metals. I am aware that strontium will tend to go into bone tissue, and I would guess that the calcium in eggshells and oyster shells would follow a similar pathway. Would it be wiser to compost the shells (and possibly bones) in the expectation that a more pure quality of calcium would remain for our crops? Are our guts capable of breaking down shell calcium and making it metabolically available for our tissue? Kind of deep thinking for me, a gardener only lightly schooled in soil science. George, Patrick, or Sharon, any thoughts?
