Re: What time do you take melatonin?

At no time.

Melatonin is elevated at night in nocturnal animals too, so what would be the point?

The “Vampire Hormone” created by darkness is much different than melatonin in pill form.

Melatonin is also formed in the skin, intestines, and the retina.

:)

Re: I know that melatonin is synthesized in the pineal gland, the retina, and bone marrow cells, but I’ve never heard about skin and intestine.

Melatonin is ubiquitous in Nature. It’s hard to find fruits, vegetables, or herbs where it isn’t, including cereals, beer, and wine.

It’s a circadian hormone that stimulates the metabolism of Growth Zones 1 and 2 of plants, and discourages the metabolism of Growth Zone 3.

There seems to be a rivalry between melatonin and melanin.

For example, bananas are rich in melatonin. Catechol melanin is created when they brown.

:)

Re: Can you expand on the vitamin C and melatonin connection?

As I understand it, melatonin, plus vitamins C and E, offer protection against inflammation.

Be aware that in 15 or 20 years, inflammation will have gone the way of cholesterol and phlogiston.

Beware of any word that has no opposite.

:)

Re: Isn’t melatonin a potent antioxidant?

There is no such thing as an antioxidant. Or an oxidant.

Western chemists continually obsess over one edge of a two-edged sword.

Yin and Yang, let alone Ning, are a mystery to them.

Hi Atom, could you expand a little more on this please:

” There is no such thing as an antioxidant. Or an oxidant ”

    Thx.

I’ll write a blog entry about it in the near future. :)

Long story short, any element or nutrient can act as an oxidant or an antioxidant, depending on the situation and environment.

In like manner, a human being fluctuates between acidity (anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation) and alkalinity (oxidation and inflammation).

We live in an animate, vitalistic world, not in an inanimate, mechanistic one.
