America’s Leading Physicians Share Stories They Can’t Forget
In Miracles We Have Seen: America’s Leading Physicians Share Stories They Can’t Forget (HCI – ISBN: 9780757319372 – September 2016 — $16.95), Dr. Harley A. Rotbart provides an assembly of essays written by peers in the medical profession, to include deans and associate deans of medical schools, academic department heads at leading university medical centers, and national opinion leaders in an array of medical specialties. These astonishing, first-person essays are written in everyday language for the revel of all readers, and depict medical outcomes that defied all expectations and, in some cases, science itself.
Dr. Rotbart writes, “Occasionally in the course of caring for our patients, we encounter events that truly stun us. Unforgettable occurrences…far exceeding the wide berth we are trained to allow for surprise.†His collection of miracles tells stories of
impossible cures, miraculous timing, and recoveries from hearts stopped longer than survivable, catastrophic injuries, and freak accidents and occurrences, including:
ï‚· A nine-year-old boy who was decapitated in a horrific car accident but survived without neurological damage.
 A woman who conceived and delivered a healthy baby – despite having had both of her fallopian tubes surgically removed.
ï‚· A young man whose only hope for survival was a heart transplant, but just as he developed a potentially fatal complication making a transplant impossible, his own heart began healing itself.
As the physicians recount their very personal reactions to these remarkable clinical experiences, it is apparent that while some miracles are more emotional than physical, the event left a lasting imprint. In most instances says Rotbart, the miracles actually directed them in their choice of specialty and has influenced much of their professional decision-making throughout their careers.
Although Miracles We Have Seen gives special insight into the lives and souls of doctors and how the miracles have affected them and their patients, Rotbart notes, “While faith and prayer certainly play an important role in many of our patients’ lives, as well as in some of the vignettes in this compilation, this is not a book about religion. Rather, this is a book about optimism and inspiration…what we don’t know or don’t understand isn’t necessarily cause for fear, and can even be reason for hope.â€
Show Highlights:
-Miracle stories from conventional, evidence-based, scientific-rooted doctors.
-Extraordinary stories of boys immersed under cold water for an indefinite time and eventually recovering after doctors considered them dead.
-Boy with neuroblastoma who “saw heaven†and rebounded just before he died.
-100% of author proceeds are being donated to charity.
-Woman who delivered a baby 2 years after having both of her fallopian tubes removed.
-9 year old boy was internally decapitated when a semi t-boned the car he was in. The violent impact left his skin intact, but severed all connections between his skull and spinal cord. He is now normal except for impaired ability to turn his head.
-Man who fell 47 stories is now neurologically normal.
-What are the spiritual implications of these stories? Cause for hope.
-What are the impacts on the doctors who report these stories?
-Young girl with cancer who developed deep fungal infection of her brain. Family had great faith and were prayerful. The fungal infection regressed and she survived, and eventually became a motivational speaker. After this experience, that doctor felt comfortable dealing with the faith of his patients and their families.
-Benefits of hope and optimism.
-Medicine is wrong sometimes, and there are factors we don’t understand.

Great show but I just have to respond to all the talk of of Dr Robart being an “evidence based” scientist in apparent contrast to the non evidence based alternative medicine or health care I of course am not able to know exactly what Dr Robart is referring to but we do see a lot of so called evidence based medicine by groups which are far from it. What promoters of this meme are generally referring to is that they are subscribers of various standard memes and proclamations produced by leading conventional medical institutions, such as AMA etc. As a phiklosophy major I believe I have some understandings of what evidence based may, or perhaps should refer to. Empirically derived based information and that which is proclaimed by the leading expert institutions are of course not automatically the same thing but is often is seen as such form many who call themselves evidence based. Both holistic types and conventional folks see clinical trials as one of the leading empirical modalities in evidence based research, Yet is often the holistic types who are more willing to dive into the nuances of the research such as whether a synthetic vitamin and proper dosage is being used and therefore it seems the holistic folks are indeed more science based than those who simply parrot the media and institutional interpretation of the significance of said studies
