Abundant Permaculture
Justin Rhodes is a Permaculturalist, film producer, author and teacher. He helps folks learn to work with nature to produce their own sustenance so they can live a more abundant life.
He is a seasoned homesteader having enjoyed many years of practicing “beyond organic†and permaculture methods on his 75 acre family farm near Asheville, NC. Justin trained under the highly accredited Geoff Lawton of PRI Australia for his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) and has studied natural chicken care under popular author, Pat Foremen.
He founded Abundant Permaculture out of a love of teaching and the sustainable movement. On his website you’ll find exhaustive permaculture articles, plentiful photo’s, cinematic educational films and business tip and tricks.
Show Highlights:
-Creating a sustainable life through community involvement
-Justin and his wife have 4 children. He talks about getting the kids involved by giving them their own operation on the farm
-Justin tells us why he doesn’t want to be 100% sustainable; depending on neighbors is great for building a good support system and creating a strong sense of community
-Dealing with deaths in a flock of chickens
-Forgoing a rooster while keeping chickens in the city; roosters are not necessary for laying eggs
-Butchering chickens; the first time is the hardest; Justin takes us through the process
-How Justin’s animals all work together; the cows mow the grass and drop the manure there; the chickens go and eat the fly larvae from the manure; the mother cow and the calf are never separated
-Justin gets 40 lbs of manure a day from 1 cow; he tells us how he uses it and creates compost
-The difference between A1 and A2 cows
-Raising cash; Justin talks about how he makes money
-Justin is not only a farmer, but a film producer. He tells us about a film he produced about raising chickens. Everything you’d want to know from A-Z.
and so much more!
