Fantastic interview with great information. I hope Dr Robillard gets my question, which I was unable to send prior to the interview: is there any research showing glutamine can actually aggravate candida overgrowth? Would very much appreciate a response.

Hi Mark and thanks for listening to the show. The short answer is “I don’t knowâ€. Candida albicans and other yeasts are readily able to convert ammonia into glutamine and glutamate, so glutamine is an amino acid yeast want (enough to make it).
I am not aware of a level of glutamine that would be directly toxic for Candida, but here are a few general thoughts: Most glutamine synthesis occurs in our muscles (making it a non-essential amino acid), but since glutamine is an amino acid, we have a significant dietary source in the protein portion of our diet. Because glutamine is reported to be used mostly by cells in the digestive tract and glutamine is required for tissue repair, there is speculation that glutamine supplementation is a good idea for general gut health, possibly fighting intestinal infections and improving our gut barrier function. With the exception of some gut barrier studies (for example, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25972430), I am not aware of direct research reports substantiating the other claims. So I don’t have any firsthand knowledge that glutamine supplementation, beyond our diet and what our body makes, would be beneficial for preventing or controlling intestinal Candida overgrowth.
