Curtis Stone

The Urban Farmer

Curtis Stone is a farmer, author, speaker and consultant. His area of expertise is in quick growing, high value annual vegetables for direct consumer market streams. His book, The Urban Farmer demonstrates organic intensive techniques with a focus on business and systems to streamline labour and production. He offers a new way to think about farming. One where quality of life and profitability coexist.

Curtis’ farm, Green City Acres is located in Kelowna, BC, Canada and was established in 2010. In an eight month growing season, the farm generates over $75,000 per year on only one third of an acre. This is done by specializing in a select group of high value, quick growing crops that allow for multiple plantings in the same beds as well as calculated intercropping strategies. The farm has been recognized internationally, as flag ship example of how profitable and productive urban agriculture can be.

Patrick I am very surprise on how your guest took over and conducted this interview which was labeled “Agriculture”. Your interview conducted by Mr. Stone, was finally saved by a phone call and two E-mails on Agriculture. I gather it will be a couple more months before you schedule a agricultural speaker.

Love, love, love this guy!!! Awesome program, thank you! What an inspiration you all are. Can’t wait to read Curtis’s book and his site too. He is speaking the wave of the future. Having tried the urban “lets involve the community in growing wholesome food,” which failed abysmally, this was a breath of fresh air for bright new beginnings. I had to laugh over Curtis’s comments regarding that whole scene. Spot on accurate. They don’t give a sheit in shinola. But those who DO are my people. Thank you!

I heard about Curtis Stome did on a permaculture podcast series awhile back so he is already pretty legendary among a certain community. On a personal but related note Stone seems to represent farming at the smaller end of the scale. I wish Curtis was more interested in promoting how we need to develop new localized buying and trading systems of local food rather than fitting into the local established markets. I do not mean to criticize Curtis since that was the way to make a living, but it seems there is really a dearth of focus and discussion of local food movements in general to dig into creative hyper localized food exchange systems and ideas I certainly would suggest someone of I had heard of them to Patrick but instead apparently need to just live with this giant hollow within the local food movement

Excellent conversation. I’ glad it wasn’t about “how’ to grow food, it was about “Why”.
