Dogs & Yellow Fat Disease

By Atom Bergstrom

Atom’s Blog

Acute Yellow Fat Disease is rarer in dogs than chronic Yellow Fat Disease.

Chronic Yellow Fat Disease is subclinical — without severe or readily observable symptoms.

Biological aging is closely associated — almost-but-not-quite synonymous — with Broad-Spectrum Yellow Fat Disease.

Chronological aging is very different from biological aging — although the beaker boys will undoubtedly tell you otherwise.

According to “What is Yellow Fat Disease,” Wag!, 2018 …

“The symptoms of yellow fat disease can occur at any age, however, it is more common for older dogs to develop this disorder. Signs that your canine has developed this disorder can include:

“Depression
“Fever
“Flaky skin
“Greasy coat
“Joint pain
“Lethargy
“Loss of appetite
“Pain to the touch
“Reluctance to move
“Subcutaneous lumps”

According to the same source …

“As this disorder is generally caused by a nutritional imbalance, a change in diet is the most effective treatment for the disease in most cases. The corrected diet should be designed to be low in polyunsaturated fats; foods that are high in polyunsaturated fats can include:

“Corn oil
“Fatty fish (herring, mackerel, salmon, trout)
“Flax seeds
“Soybean oil
“Sunflower oil
“Sunflower seeds
“Walnuts
“Wheat germ”

<>

Which of the above polyunsaturated fats are the worst?

In order of severity …

Fatty fish
Flax seeds
Sunflower oil
Soybean oil
Sunflower seeds
Walnuts
Corn oil
Wheat germ

The last two items shouldn’t even be on the list (unless thoroughly rancid).

Peat-atarians might disagree, but I haven’t been able to find any examples of corn oil causing Yellow Fat Disease.

However, I don’t use corn oil at all except for specific therapies combined with tomato juice.

Yellow Fat Disease isn’t the only disease listed in the World Health Organization’s International Causes of Death.

Here’s an example of a very serious type of Yellow Fat Disease.

Jane Meggitt (“What Causes Necrotizing Granulomatous Steatitis in Dogs?,” Daily Puppy, 2018) wrote …

“A sudden lump on your dog could indicate steatitis.”

According to the same source …

“Necrotizing granulomatous steatitis is a mouthful, but, broken down, necrotizing refers to dying, while granulomatous means inflammation. Steatitis, more often panniculitis, is inflamed fat. Such a diagnosis means your dog is suffering from dying, inflamed fatty tissue.”

According to the same source …

“If you feed a quality commercial dog food, it’s unlikely your pet will develop steatitis because of his diet. If you feed your dog home-cooked meals, that’s another story.”

<>

Why does a home-cooked meal give your dog Yellow Fat Disease?

Why doesn’t a commercial dog food do the same?

Why does a “natural organic” dog food give your dog Yellow Fat Disease?

What’s going on here?

<>

According to “Ethoxyquin In Pet Foods,” Holistic and Organic Pet Shoppe, 2012-2018 …

“Ethoxyquin is listed and identified as a hazardous chemical by OSHA. It has a rating of 3 on a scale of 1 to 6, with 6 being super toxic requiring less than 7 drops to cause death.”

<>

Why is ethoxyquin used in commercial pet foods?

It slows the progression of Yellow Fat Disease.

Ironically, it’s far easier for your dog or cat to develop Yellow Fat Disease from “natural organic” pet food and home-cooked meals containing any of the following omega 3 fatty acids (n order of severity) …

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
DPA (docosapentaenoic acid)
ALA (alpha-linolenic acid)

<>

Omega 3 fatty acids supposedly boost and build the brain.

No. Omega 3 fatty acids SWELL the brain.

<>

Beware of misleading marketing hype. Examples include …

“Benefits of DHA for Puppies.”

“Boosting Puppy Brains for Trainability with Omega-3 Fatty Acids.”

“Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Great for Itchy Pets!”

“Best Fish Oil Supplements for Dogs.”

“Essential Health For Dogs From Fish Oils.”

“Discover the Benefits of Fish Oil For Your Dog.”

“The Best Omega Oil for Your Dog or Puppy.”

“Calculating How Many Fish Oil Capsules to Give to Dogs.”

“Five Dog Diseases Fish Oil Can Help Treat.”

Etc.

It’s all about Fake News and Alternative Facts.
