The serotonin hypothesis was junk science to begin with.
95 percent of the “brain†neurotransmitter serotonin is in the bowel, and it stops dreaming and psychedelic experiences in their tracks when it accumulates in the brain.
The less serotonin in the brain, the less we need to sleep.
The more serotonin in the brain, the more we need to sleep.
Adano Ley (Swami Nitty-Gritty) encouraged wakefulness and 24-hour consciousness.
He never explained (to me, at least) if this meant (1) exorcising serotonin from the brain or (2) remaining conscious despite the serotonin buildup in the brain.
Complicating the investigation of neurotransmitters is the recent discoveries of mega-neurotransmitters in the brain …
carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide
The “spiritual” investigation of consciousness is still in its infancy, and most everything we know about it derives from medical research.
In other words, Rick Strassman, M.D., author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule, is a documented member of the Medical Priesthood, and we should hold that against him. :/

nice atom :)
i stumbled over an article on cholecystokinin today and was intrigued to find it’s a gastrointestinal hormone used routinely by scientists to induce panic attacks. do you have any recommended reads on gut-brain biology?

by the way atom, do you employ any herbal staples? i used to be big on the very anxiolytic ayurvedic ones like brahmi and ashwagandha, but lately i’m drawn to flowers. an interview with a centurian professor from china says she credits a daily tea of mainly rose and chrysanthemum. these both feel like very gentle yet effective candidates for overall well-being, yet go largely unnoticed in the western alt-zeigeist :)

Cayenne, mustard, and turmeric are about the only herbs I’m drawn to lately. :)
Swami Nitty-Gritty cited mustard as an anytime cleanser.

Sir AtomBomb.com
I’m doing my best to adapt the Chronobiotic Nutrition, however I currently work night shift at the hospital from 645pm-7:15am. This obviously creates an imbalance normal sleeping pattern for myself and colleagues. What kind of approach would you recommend for our type of work shift since our nights and days are upside down, Thanks for all the advice… you truly are the Bomb.com of information. :D

Thank you for your kind words! :)
Your question applies to many of us who live in the Age of Edison, so I wrote a blog entry about it.
