Re: Is vitamin K toxic?
Yes. No. Maybe.
YES …
Excess vitamin K1 – the kind you get from plant sources – is contraindicated if you’re taking coumarins, warfarin, ginger, turmeric, ginkgo, etc.
It can also make varicose veins worse.
Excess vitamin K1 can encourage the GROWTH of cancer.
NO …
Vitamin K1 is normally not toxic for most people.
It can discourage the SPREAD of cancer.
MAYBE …
Vitamin K1 in a vitamin pill is often different than vitamin K1 in plants.
:)
YES …
Excess K2 – MK-4 through MK-14 -is contraindicated if you’re taking coumarins, warfarin, ginger, turmeric, ginkgo, etc.
It can also make varicose veins worse.
Excess vitamin K2 can encourage the GROWTH of cancer.

MAYBE …
Vitamin K2 occurs in several types – MK-4, MK-5, MK-6, MK-7, MK-8, MK-9, MK-10, MK-11, MK-12, MK-13, and MK-14.
We as human beings can synthesize the MK-4 variety in our gut.
MK-4 is the only well-researched form of vitamin K2.
It’s the only form of vitamin K2 proven to affect bone and cartilage growth, strongly activating the transcription of two specific genes – GDF15 and STC2 – in osteoblast cells.
COLOSTRUM is 100% MK-4 and extremely rich in it.
Whole cream is 100% MK-4 and rich in it.
Ditto butter.
Whole milk is 100% MK-4 but not very rich in it. (The amount increases when the cows supplying it are grass-fed.)
MK-7 has no proven effect on bone growth.
Natto contains mostly MK-7 and no MK-4.
Gouda and brie cheeses contain almost no MK-4.
Rats – unlike most other animals – contain no MK-4.
Rats were the primary food for Easter Islanders, but that doesn’t necessarily mean an MK-7-rich diet will compel you to build monumental statues.
:)
YES …
Excess vitamin K3 – a synthetic form of vitamin K – is toxic in any amount.
It can also make varicose veins worse.
Excess vitamin K3 can encourage the GROWTH of cancer.
NO …
Vitamin K3 can discourage the SPREAD of cancer.
MAYBE …
Maybe scientists will discover vitamin K3 has some kind of therapeutic value.
It certainly is of monetary value to them.
Maybe you can detoxify vitamin K3 with your saliva.

It can also make varicose veins worse.

Thanks for this post. You mentioned natto has MK-7 but no MK-4. Are there any benefits from eating natto?
March 10, 2013 @ 4:50 pm atomb
Definitely YES.
Natto contains pyrazine, vitamin PQQ, etc., etc., etc.
The bone growth factor in natto is not it’s MK-7.
Partitioned chemistry always leaves us in the lurch.

Isaac Asimov (The Chemicals of Life, 1954) wrote …
“The molecule of the substitute is like that of the real thing except that it is simpler. Whereas Vitamin K has two rings of carbon atoms in its molecule with a long ‘tail’ of more carbon atoms attached, the substitute has merely the rings without the tail. The interesting thing about it is that the substitute is over a hundred times as effective as the real thing.”
Yes, but the substitute is toxic while the natural form is not.

Vitamin K has been on my radar for a long time. Thanks for this post! What do you recommend for varicose veins?
March 8, 2013 @ 1:44 pm atomb
Swami Nitty-Gritty explained, “Varicose veins are caused by iron oxides.”
He recommended a boiled orange …
“The best vitamin C on a tree is from citrus. Eat citrus at room temperature. A refrigerated orange causes citric acid to form gas. For varicose veins or capillary fragility eat a three-minute orange.”
.. and …
“Citric acid bioflavonoids have the capacity to chelate excess iron out of veins. Eat a boiled orange at Spleen Time.”
Spleen Time is 9:00-11:00 a.m.
Put a room-temperature orange in enough room-temperature water for an orange to float.
Swami Nitty-Gritty remarked, “You can’t drown an orange.”
Bring the orange to a rolling boil and boil it for three minutes.
Score the orange with a knife from stem to stern into four quarters.
Peel the skin off one section of the four quarters at a time to eat each section while it’s still warm.
The Toxic Engram for varicose veins is (usually) “always missing the boat.”

The heart.

Re: Why is the Atomic Energy Commission donating funds for vitamin K research?
Vitamin K protects against radiation.
All green plants contain vitamin K.
The color green is radioprotective.
