Mesh-Free Hernia Repair?

I phoned the Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library in Fort Worth to track down the three editions of the osteopathic textbook describing non-surgical manipulation techniques for dealing with various hernias.

The first edition of this textbook was over 100 years old.

The librarian only found one book on the subject (and it wasn’t one of the three I mentioned) …

Harry Clements, Self-Treatment for Hernias, 1953

I haven’t read it. What about anyone else out there in One Radio Network Land?

What about mesh-free hernia surgeries?

There was a time when all abdominal and pelvic surgeries were mesh-free.

Pharaoh Merneptah of ancient Egypt had a successful hernia surgery.

His surgeons used no mesh.

The first mesh repair was performed in 1958 by herniologist Francis C. Usher.

<>

Why is mesh favored?

One reason is because you’re in and out of the hospital in one hour.

Recovery from some of the older methods took as long as 50 days.

Heaven forbid we have any slackers in our “get your anus back on the job” society.

No watching Game of Thrones reruns all day allowed.

Tote that barge and lift that bale, then fall asleep exhausted while watching HBO or Netflix.

Wake up refreshed, so you can continue your miserable existence as a robotic wage slave.

<>

Why else is mesh favored?

It’s profitable.

It’s been known since 1924 (probably before) that tendons and fascia are living structures.

They’re ALIVE.

Re: Why were the mesh-free surgeries of the past so unsuccessful?

Who says? Doctors and doctor sniffers?

    Doctors are not historians.

Doctors don’t know Zopyrus from Zhang Zhongjing.

Mainstream medicine is full of … HUBRIS.

Freud didn’t invent “Freudian” therapy. It was named after him to associate it with “Jewishness” to discredit it by “Nordic” psychiatrists.

Freud was a psychologist. Psychiatrists shunned him.

Pierre Janet (1859-1947) coined terms such as “subconscious” and “dissociation” before Dr. Freud had a clue in a clinic-load.
