Adano Ley (Swami Nitty-Gritty), Melissa Wolfe, and I were in the Bodhi Tree Metaphysical Book Store in West Hollywood.
A customer in the store asked Adano for a mantra.
He told her, “Jesus Christ, protect me.”
She was disappointed. “Don’t you have an Indian mantra for me to use?”
Adano replied, “Why would you trade the intimacy of your own language for a foreign word you don’t understand?”
Exiting the Bodhi Tree, Adano scoffed, “There’s no spirituality in there.”
Any word will do for a mantra as long as you repeat it often and continuously.
Adano told us back in the 1970s (at the Texas Institute of Reflex Sciences) …
“You can even use Coca-Cola for a mantra as long as you stick to it.”
One way to select a mantra is the LeShan Telephone Book Method, explained by Lawrence LeShan in his 1975 book, How to Meditate.
Randomly open a telephone book and point to a name with your eyes closed.
Pick the first syllable of the first name your finger lands on.
Randomly open to another page and point to a name with your eyes closed.
Pick the first syllable of the first name your finger lands on.
Combine the two syllables, and now you have a mantra.
If you don’t like your first choice, finger-point until one “fits.”

The following is just my present understanding, any constructive criticism is welcome.
Regarding recent posts by Atom here on his blog. How precious the true will is. A key attribute of pseudo will (AKA. hypnosis, mind-control, subconscious programming) is the use of language – words. Often those who speak words or sentences out loud in a context quite repetitively and predictably seem to be revealing a symptom of being under pseudo will. They are using mantras of pseudo will. The use of words are useful for finding new dimensions of subjective understanding, therefore for topics on the fridges of our understanding, they are useful for connecting facts and creating revelatory discoveries. However when I find myself automatically speaking a word (usually internally) that expresses some understanding (however objectively right or wrong) that is already well familiar to me and not on the fringes of my understanding (therefore highly unlikely to be of any revelatory value), then I know I am acting under pseudo will.
In many cases, I find that simply experiencing moments without any internal dialogue, or interpersonal dialogue puts me in position of more awareness, comprehension, self-control and power. In such a state my true will is strengthened. There is a time for words and a time for silent observation, we should learn to recognize and use that.
The comfort that I get from being in a state of pseudo will, despite the vague dissatisfaction that comes from it, is strange. It is as though somehow re-enforcing our beliefs about something via our words/mantra’s is more entertaining or secure that simply observing the objective reality around us. Observing the world around us (even the world which we have been around many times before, and therefore claim to know) actually seems to take a lot more energy and concentration than turning inward and revisiting our existing understandings and their accompanying emotions – even if those understandings and emotions are making us sick. The same goes for turning to devices that use little effort, give quick, stimulating feedback to our shallow/primitive senses but add little or no lasting meaning our broader purpose in life.
By some innate quality of laziness we avoid the new that requires any great, adaptive-stress response. By default we try to get through another day using the minimum amount of effort needed, to reduce friction. Perhaps this is a great cost of efficiency/technology – we get things done with less effort, but in experiencing less friction with reality, we may become less human. This lessened friction takes the seemingly irrelevant details out of life, but in fact there are no irrelevant details – all details give the coherence necessary in making any experience or concept have a quality of meaning. When all details are removed to ease our stress then there is no experience. Experience is stress. Friction/stress can be a creative force and is necessary for humanity. If we can subjectively perceive stress in the right way then we possess a key essence of satisfying live. Notice how the things we work hard for, or bring us close to death, are much more valuable to use than the things simply given to us. Our laziness and unquenchable desire for more efficiency or pain avoidance seems to be rooted in a fear and habit that we learn as we grow up – very young children do not seem to possess it; their boundless energy, curiosity and observation testify to that.
The youtube poem video recently posted on oneradionetwork.com titled “Live Life the Real Way†was brilliant and inspirational to this post, by the way.

According to Swami Nitty-Gritty …
“Be like the camera, photographing but not analyzing. Halfway is the observation, but not the mothering or fathering of it.”
He also said …
“The child has a holographic vision camera, and the adult has a normal vision camera. The computer comes later than television.”

Swami Nitty-Gritty said …
“Strontium is the camera. Lithium is the light from the projector. Rubidium is the projection screen.”

Fascinating.
All that gives me something work with, thanks Atom.
Eventually I will buy and read “Butterflies Need No Taxidermist”.

Hello Atom,
Is the blank state (delta brain wave state, that’s fourth chakra right?) synonymous with “Flow” as described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, or does it end at Third Chakra (Lower Mental Body)?
Related to you previous comment on awareness/camera vs. observation… TV. vs. computer… Are we capable of both at the same time? I seem to become very comfortable in what seems to be a state of “dual focus” where macro awareness of my environment, (and perhaps including my condition and objectives) is combined with a micro-awareness of my environment (“… “), that I call observation or focus. It seems the two are compatible with each other, perhaps the micro awareness meshes with the macro awareness and vice-versa, creating a single integrated focus/awareness. They seem to be associated with pure will, with the macro awareness defining-retaining broad purpose and direction (like sense of priority or position on a map) and the micro awareness defining-retaining specific purpose and direction (like specifically how to interact with the environment via action, observation or word. But the macro and micro cannot properly function without each other and (with shifting prominence) they provide equilibrium suited for the situation at hand. For example the macro prevents obsession, while the micro allows will/faith to be converted into inter-action with the world – manifestation. And perhaps the macro awareness allows the full schema of the mind to be available to the mind so the micro awareness may integrate new observations with that schema. Without the macro awareness, the micro awareness cannot deposit information in meaningful, cohesive ways to form bodies of knowledge. The macro provides presence, and the micro gives shape/form.
Any thoughts on this?
I also find that if I try to simply be aware of my surroundings with macro focus, but without micro awareness (specific observation?), my mind/being is strained to not allow word-visual-emotion-based thoughts to flow – I easily become attached to (lose awareness) of my thoughts. Maintaining a sense of awe of my surroundings requires frequent/constant effort. Perhaps its a pathological condition but my mind/being seems to be idle and wants to do something – like it has one “hand” free. However if I use a micro awareness with the macro awareness then my mind/being maintains awareness with much less effort – like both “hands” are engaged.
Do I seem to be in on the right track for delta brain wave state or not?
Kind regards and appreciation for your thoughts and love,
Justin

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Abraham Maslow, and Robert Greene have things in common! :)
You’ll know you’re in Delta Brain Wave Consciousness when you wake up one morning totally paralyzed from just below the nose down.
You’ll know you’re leaving Delta behind as soon as sensation begins to come back into your toes and fingers.
Immobile Delta Consciousness is called Savikalpa Samadhi.
Mobile Delta Consciousness (when you pick up your totally paralyzed body and walk with it) is called Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

Haha, thanks Adam… and thanks for the names… very interesting and very elusive.. heheh… although several times I’ve had the wake up with paralysis thing. The most recent time was accompanied by strong dark blue sensation. These experiences are accompanied by what I interpreted as a hostile presence/entity. I’ve heard that such an experience is somewhat common among people…
I’ve heard “scientific explanations” that such experiences are result of being very tired – and sleep includes delta state, so it sort of makes sense… but the presence/entity associated with it does not. Your thoughts?

There are nightmares and there are night stallions, according to Adano Ley.
Nightmares occur in the theta state, while night terrors occur in the delta state.
Yes, it’s possible to reach the higher “planes” without a Guru, but some soldiers of fortune die in the attempt.
It’s like being born without a mother, according to Adano.
Fortunately, almost no one is knowledgeable enough or resolute enough to approach these higher planes, much less access them.
Perhaps there are out-of-body Gurus, like Philemon, the alleged”spirit guide” of Carl Jung.
Deliberately cultivating night stallions without an instruction manual can be risky business …

Gosh. I don’t think I’d want to cultivate night stallions, period. Have you experienced any any of the work of Ed and Lorraine Warren?

No. Swami Nitty-Gritty told me not to have anything to do with psychics or channelers or anyone involved with “electron fixations of the human mind.” :o

Hi Atom,
Why some young people have vocal fry and up speak ? Do you know anything about that?
A friend of mine started talking now with a lower pitch voice when he is complainning about his job.
March 6, 2015 @ 4:10 pm atomb
Vocal fry is a masculine pitch that tends to make a person appear more educated and upwardly mobile.
It may be associated with financial insecurity and an unconscious wish for connecting with a father figure.
