Sacred Sex & the Left Big Toe
I wasn’t allowed in a sweat lodge because of my astrological armlet.
The sweat lodge leader said it would burn my arm, and I wouldn’t remove it.
During the ceremony, the sweat lodge leader’s wife, who remained outside too, explained that sage placed under the armlet would have protected my arm.
“But,” she mischievously added, “I wouldn’t let it bother you. I have my best spiritual experiences in the bedroom.”
Sacred Sex has been around for millennia.
We usually think of Tantra as an Eastern thing — something for Yogis and Kama Sutry lovers.
But Christianity has always had a horny streak running through it.
Case in point …
the Moravian Church, especially the one centered around London in the 1700s before the American and French revolutions.
The “Sifting Times” of the late 1740s were an earlier version of “Woodstock” and the “Summer of Love” in the late 1960s.
Who said all that dancing was caused by ergot intoxication?
Was it a Death Dance or part of the Great Awakening?
Some historians claim Tantric skills like the “fountain-pen technique” of urethral suction arrived in London via the East India Company.
Others say the Moravian Church and revelators like Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) and William Blake (1757-1827) developed these techniques independently of the Orient.
Tobias Churton (Jerusalem! The Real Life of William Blake, 2015) wrote …
“Blake’s etched and printed image showing the moment when ‘Milton’ actually enters Blake’s foot is astonishing. As the naked, ‘electrified’ poet leans backwards, his arms outstretched in an erotic posture of total acceptance, a starry comet blazes down and cracks like a firework into his left heel and toes. The figure has a healthy erection, obscured in some copies of the plate by underwear (plate 32 of the Library of Congress copy, for example), applied for reasons of ‘taste’ by either [Frederick] Tatham or [John] Linnell. The application is the worst possible taste.
“The erection is important.
“Blake is familiar with the esoteric significance of the big toe of the left foot. According to Swedenborg’s Spiritual Diary (1758), the state of the feet is directly related to the spiritual state of the person.”
According to the same source …
“Swedenborg specifically relates the big toe of the left foot to the genitals (a Tantric doctrine also), and its stimulation by the spiritual condition of the person brings to the left foot a ‘fiery’ sensation linked to the fire in the genitals.”
Curiously, Adano Ley (Swami Nitty-Gritty) told me one way to identify a “true Master” is …
“He’ll be playing with his left big toe while he gives Satsang.”
